Why do young people engage in behaviours such as vaping or excessive cellphone use, even when they understand the potential risks?

This interactive, evidence-informed workshop explores the relationship between adolescent brain development, social media, technology use, vaping, and substance-related behaviours, with a focus on youth aged 13–18.

Participants will gain a better understanding of how social environments, emotional regulation, nicotine dependence, and behavioural reinforcement can influence young people's decisions. The workshop will also examine why approaches such as repeated warnings, punishment, and fear-based messaging may have limited effectiveness in promoting lasting behaviour change.
Drawing on principles from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing, participants will be introduced to practical communication and coping strategies that can support healthier decision-making, strengthen relationships, and encourage constructive conversations with young people.

The session will include real-life scenarios, interactive discussions, and opportunities to ask questions.

Topics include:
  • Adolescent brain development and decision-making
  • Cellphones, social media, and behavioural habits
  • Vaping, nicotine dependence, and substance use
  • Understanding why behaviours begin and continue
  • Supportive communication, healthy boundaries, and emotional regulation
  • Practical strategies for parents, caregivers, educators, and youth
